Michael Blackstock
Michael Blackstock is a member of the Gitxsan Nation of Northwest BC. He is a painter, carver, sculptor, writer, photographer, poet, and multimedia artist. He makes masks from wood, copper shields, and silkscreen prints.
Michael has studied under Gitxsan Master Carver, Walter Harris at the Royal BC Museum in Victoria. Harris won the Governor General’s award for his artistic contribution to Canada and has a limestone sculpture of an orca above the doorway of the Commonwealth Room on Parliament Hill.
Michael is also a published author. His book "Oceaness”, published in 2010, was written to inspire readers to respect the environment and realize the importance of water. The book features his theory of Blue Ecology which was developed with Elders by interweaving their perspective with that of Western Science.
