Patrick Cheechoo
Patrick Cheechoo, a Mushkeego, is from Constance Lake First Nation, Ontario. He and his wife, Dr. Keri Cheechoo, have 5 adult children and 3 grandchildren. In addition to painting, Mr. Cheechoo enjoys carving, jewellery making, wildlife photography, digital art and he is a successful stand-up comedian.
When he first started painting, Patrick was mentored by two globally renowned woodland artists, his aunt Dr. Shirley Cheechoo and his late uncle Blake Debassige. Mr. Cheechoo began with a traditional form of art encompassing flowing lines and brilliant colours reminiscent of the Woodland Cree style of art; as such, he credits artists such as Carl Ray, Benjamin Chee Chee and Clemence Wescoupe for this style of artwork. Today he incorporates a realism wildlife art style that is inspired by artists such as Robert Bateman, Don Ningewance, Jerry Martin, Jayson Lucas and Jeff Monias. In recent years, Patrick finds fulfilment in fusing both styles into his paintings; furthermore, through mini-paintings that he has dubbed his “Syllabic Series”, he is able to maintain and, at times, reconnect with the joy of and his love for painting.
Why so many Loons?! Amongst the selection posted on Mr. Cheechoo’s vendor page you will notice repeat pieces of loons, geese, chickadees and other images; these pieces are the paintings Patrick completes while teaching students from all over Canada through virtual Art Sessions. He has lead Art Sessions for students from Grades 1-8, secondary and post-secondary as well as corporate participants for over 20 years.
