Long ago, before and after colonization, Indigenous women were excellent handlers of Native Ponies. This woman in the painting would harness up her ponies and bundle all of her children but their eyes and load them into a sled. The father would stay home to do chores and pray for their safe return. As the sled left very early in the morning, the children would watch the cabin lights dimming as they crossed the frozen lake. Otters in the painting flow and would often pop their heads up in air holes. After they traded goods, they would head back home, soon spotting the cabin lights getting brighter as they returned in the evening.
