Smudging
It is believed that smudging connects people to the Creator. It is a traditional ceremony for purifying or cleansing the soul of negative thoughts of a person, place or your own feelings. Four elements are involved in a smudge; the first is the shell (container) - representing water, the second is the four sacred plants - sweetgrass, cedar, sage & tobacco - representing Mother Earth, the third is the fire produced, and the smoke produced from the fire represents air, the fourth element. Place a small pinch of each medicine into the shell, light, and use feather to fan smoke. To discard the ashes of the burned medicines, put outside on to the earth... the negative energy is then released outside of our life.
