Three Trees Art
Mark Nadjiwan is an Anishnabek artist, from the Chippewas of Nawash First Nation (Neyaashiinigmiing).
This self-taught visual artist uses pen and ink in traditional styles combining woodland motifs with shapes and forms from the North West. Woodland life and the outdoors are major inspirations for Mark who is grateful to be surrounded by nature in his life. Often on the waters, enjoying paddling trips with his wife, Mark seeks to express the internal experiences felt on the land, externally through his art. In addition to the images, Mark also writes stories to accompany his artwork that express what the animals meant to his people, as well as what they can mean or teach to all people.
In 2014, Mark was one of four Indigenous artists in Canada to participate in an exhibition in France called “Nature and Spirituality.” More recently, he is part of a team to lobby parliament to officially name the whiskyjack (Canada Jay) as the national bird for Canada. Mark has rendered this particular bird in his piece titled “For Seven Generations.”
Mark has been a proud vendor with the Festival since 2014, and has appreciated the organization and dedication of the team behind the scenes for the Indigenous Marketplace.
