White Bear Standing

Sherry Crawford of White Bear Standing, is a proud member of the Kijicho Manito Madaouskarini Algonquin Nation.

Although she had been sketching and drawing for years, her career as an artist began seriously in 2010 when a woman, who would become a dear friend, at the Tom Thomas Native Art Museum inspired and encouraged Sherry to develop and follow her art further. She includes many Anishnabe teachings in her works such as the seven grandfather teachings and the four directions of the medicine wheel, as well as faces in trees to represent the ancestors and the Standing People.

Sherry took some time exploring various mediums, from pencil portraits to digital drawings before finding a style that was uniquely her own. While enjoying the use of acrylic markers, the traditional images started coming through her works.

In June of 2020, at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Sherry organized a drive-through art exhibit in Peterborough, where she resides, with great success; providing much-needed enjoyment for many to take in artistic creativity during these challenging circumstances.
